How to use

1

Enter the amount. In Add VAT mode it is the net (pre-VAT) price; in Remove VAT mode it is the gross (VAT-inclusive) price.

2

Choose the direction: Add VAT to go from net to gross, or Remove VAT to extract the VAT already inside a gross price.

3

Pick the VAT rate — 21%, 10% or 4% for Spain, 20% for the UK, 19% for Germany, or type any custom rate.

4

Optionally switch the currency between €, £ and $.

Read the net, VAT amount, and gross totals — they update instantly as you type, with no page reload.

Features

Add and Remove VAT

Works both ways: add VAT to a net price, or reverse it to pull the VAT back out of a gross, VAT-inclusive amount. The result panel labels net, VAT, and gross clearly for either direction.

Spanish IVA and International Rates

One-tap chips for Spain's 21%, 10% and 4% IVA plus common European standard rates, and a custom field for any rate — invoices, imports, or a country not listed.

Private & Mobile-First

Every figure is calculated locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, it works offline once loaded, and the layout is built for one-handed use on a phone.

Why Choose This Tool?

Calculated in Your Browser

Every calculation runs locally on your device. There is no sign-up, no tracking of the amounts you enter, and no data sent to any server. The tool loads instantly, keeps your invoice figures completely private, and keeps working even with no connection once the page has loaded.

Reverse VAT Done Right

Removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the rate. To take 21% VAT out of a gross price you divide by 1.21, not multiply by 0.79 — a mistake that overstates the VAT on every line. This tool applies the correct formula automatically, so the net and VAT always add back up to the gross you entered.

Built for Spain and Beyond

The Spanish IVA rates (21% general, 10% reduced, 4% super-reduced) are front and center, but the currency switch and custom-rate field make it just as useful for UK VAT at 20%, Irish VAT at 23%, or any rate you need. One page serves freelancers, shoppers, and small businesses across borders.

Genuinely Free

No paywall, no watermark, no limits, and no app to install. Bookmark it once and it opens the instant you need to add VAT to a quote, check the tax on a receipt, or work out the net cost of a purchase for your books. Because it is a lightweight web page rather than a native app, it opens immediately, uses almost no data, and never asks for an account or in-app purchase — it just does the one job you opened it for.

Understanding VAT: How to Add and Remove Value Added Tax

Value Added Tax (VAT) — known as IVA in Spain and much of Latin America — is a consumption tax added to most goods and services. Whether you are a freelancer issuing an invoice, a shopper checking a receipt, or a small business reconciling your books, being able to add VAT to a net price and remove it from a gross price quickly and correctly saves time and avoids costly rounding mistakes.

What Is VAT?

VAT is charged as a percentage of the price at each stage of production and distribution, but the end consumer ultimately bears the cost. A business collects VAT on its sales (output VAT) and reclaims the VAT it paid on its purchases (input VAT), remitting the difference to the tax authority. That is why getting the arithmetic right matters: the net figure is what the business keeps, and the VAT figure is what it owes.

Adding VAT: Net to Gross

Adding VAT is straightforward. The formula is VAT = net × (rate ÷ 100), and the gross price is net + VAT. On a €100 net price with 21% Spanish IVA, the VAT is 100 × 0.21 = €21, for a gross of €121. If you sell a service for €500 plus 21% IVA, you invoice €605 and set €105 aside for the tax authority.

Removing VAT: Gross to Net (Reverse VAT)

Removing VAT is where mistakes happen. Many people wrongly subtract the rate from the gross — taking 21% off €121 by multiplying by 0.79 gives €95.59, which is wrong. The correct method is to divide the gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100). So €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 net, and the VAT is €121 − €100 = €21. The reason is that the 21% was applied to the smaller net figure, not the larger gross figure, so you cannot simply reverse it by subtracting the same percentage. This calculator uses the division method automatically, guaranteeing that net and VAT always add back to the gross you entered.

Spanish IVA Rates

  • 21% (tipo general): the standard rate for most goods and services.
  • 10% (tipo reducido): applies to items such as hospitality, passenger transport, and certain foods.
  • 4% (tipo superreducido): for essentials like bread, milk, books, newspapers, and medicines.

Spain also has special regimes such as the Canary Islands' IGIC, which is a separate tax with its own rates rather than mainland IVA. When in doubt about which rate applies to a specific product, consult the Agencia Tributaria guidance rather than guessing.

VAT Across Europe

Standard VAT rates differ by country: 20% in the United Kingdom and France, 19% in Germany, 22% in Italy, and 23% in Ireland and Portugal, among others. Reduced and zero rates vary even more. If you buy from or sell to another country, the applicable rate and the rules on who accounts for the VAT (for example the reverse-charge mechanism for many cross-border B2B services) can change — this tool lets you plug in any rate so the maths is right whichever jurisdiction you are working in.

Rounding and Invoices

On a single line the arithmetic is exact, but invoices with many lines can drift by a cent depending on whether VAT is rounded per line or on the total. Most tax authorities accept either approach as long as it is applied consistently. This calculator rounds each figure to two decimal places, matching how amounts appear on a typical invoice, so the net, VAT, and gross you see are the ones you would print.

Why Use a Dedicated VAT Calculator

Working out 21% of an odd number, or dividing a gross figure by 1.21 in your head, is exactly the kind of task that is easy to get slightly wrong — and small errors compound across an invoice or a quarter's bookkeeping. A calculator removes the guesswork instantly, shows the net and VAT side by side, and — because this one runs entirely in your browser — is ready the moment you need it, with no app to open, no sign-up, and no figures ever leaving your device.

When Not to Use This Calculator

This tool computes the net/VAT/gross arithmetic for a single amount at a single rate — it does not prepare a VAT return (Spain's Modelo 303, for example), apply the reverse-charge mechanism for cross-border B2B services, or handle multi-line invoices where different lines carry different VAT rates. If you are self-employed and need to file quarterly VAT in Spain, use this calculator to check individual figures, then take the totals to your gestoría or accounting software for the actual filing — this tool is not a substitute for tax advice or a bookkeeping system.

Three Worked Walkthroughs

  • Lucía's freelance invoice: Lucía is a freelance designer in Madrid invoicing a client €650 for a logo project. She switches to Add VAT mode, enters €650, picks the 21% general rate, and gets a €786.50 gross invoice total with €136.50 to set aside for her next Modelo 303 filing.
  • Tom's receipt check in London: Tom wants to know how much of a £48 restaurant bill is VAT. He switches to Remove VAT mode, enters £48, picks 20% UK VAT, and sees the net is £40.00 with £8.00 in VAT — confirming the receipt's own VAT line matches.
  • Marco's cross-border quote: Marco is quoting a client in Italy and wants to compare his Spanish price (21% IVA) against what an Italian supplier would charge (22% VAT) on the same €1,000 net service. He runs the same net amount at both rates side by side to see the gross difference before deciding how to price the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate divided by 100 to get the VAT, then add it to the net price. For €100 at 21% IVA: 100 × 0.21 = €21 VAT, for a €121 gross total. Switch this tool to Add VAT mode and it does it instantly.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross (VAT-inclusive) price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. To remove 21% VAT from €121: 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 net, so the VAT is €21. Do not subtract 21% from the gross — that gives the wrong answer. Use Remove VAT mode and the tool applies the correct formula.

Why can't I just subtract the percentage to remove VAT?

Because the VAT was calculated on the smaller net amount, not the larger gross amount. Subtracting 21% from a gross price takes 21% of the gross, which is more than the VAT that was actually added. The correct reverse operation is to divide by 1.21, which this calculator does automatically.

What are the VAT (IVA) rates in Spain?

Spain has three IVA rates: 21% general (most goods and services), 10% reduced (hospitality, transport, some foods), and 4% super-reduced (bread, milk, books, medicines). The Canary Islands use a separate tax called IGIC instead of mainland IVA.

Does this work for UK VAT and other countries?

Yes. Use the 20% chip for UK VAT, 19% for Germany, or the custom field for any rate such as Ireland's 23% or Italy's 22%. You can also switch the currency between €, £ and $. The formula is the same everywhere — only the rate changes.

Should VAT be rounded per line or on the total?

Most tax authorities accept either, as long as you are consistent. This calculator rounds each figure to two decimal places, matching how amounts typically appear on an invoice. For multi-line invoices, small one-cent differences can occur depending on the method your accounting software uses.

Is my invoice information private?

Yes. Every calculation happens locally in your browser. The amounts you enter are never uploaded, stored, or tracked, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Does the calculator work on my phone?

Yes. It is designed mobile-first with large tap targets for the rate and mode buttons, and results that update instantly as you type, so you can add or remove VAT with one hand wherever you are.

Does this calculator prepare my VAT return (Modelo 303 or similar)?

No. It calculates net, VAT, and gross for one amount at a time. Use it to verify individual figures, then compile your quarterly totals in your accounting software or with your gestoría/accountant for the actual filing.

How does the reverse-charge mechanism affect which rate I should use?

For many cross-border B2B services within the EU, the customer — not the supplier — accounts for the VAT under the reverse-charge mechanism, so no VAT may appear on the invoice at all. This calculator computes the arithmetic for whatever rate applies to your specific transaction; confirm with the EU's official reverse-charge guidance or your tax advisor whether it applies before choosing a rate.

Can I calculate VAT on an invoice with multiple lines at different rates?

Not directly — this tool computes one amount and one rate at a time. For a multi-rate invoice, run each line separately and add the net, VAT, and gross totals yourself, or use accounting software that supports mixed-rate invoices.
